I remember going to Viet School on Saturday’s with my buddies. It was really fun and something to look forward to. We would sing and eat together, building the best of bonds and relationships. After reading “Viet Weekends” by Thi Bui, I found that I really resonated with this comic.

As a young child, I was fortunate enough to have my parents put in Viet school. At that young age, I remember hating my parents for it. Going to Vietnamese school to learn how to talk was not how I wanted to spend my Saturday’s. Little did I know, I was going to meet some of my best friends here and not only learn the language, but about the rich history of our culture as well.

I met some of my best friends at Viet School. Though they don’t attend Fountain Valley High School with me, we still keep in touch. My friend Josh and I would always chase each other while stuffing our mouths with snacks, though we were continuously yelled at by our teachers. We would sing the Vietnamese National Anthem, and giggle every time we forgot the words. The fond memories we created through our time spent at Viet School was unforgettable.

Similar to Thi Bui’s friend, when I first went to the Viet School, there was a very strict and mean teacher. She was really rough on us to begin with, but as time passed, she opened up to us and became one of my favorite teachers. She even chose me as her favorite student at the end of the year. Later my parents and her developed close relationships and she now gives us food from her restaurant every time we visit. We should really cherish the relationships with have with others because it can lead to lasting memories and incredible life stories and bonds. Also, even free food :)
